Today it happened. I wrote about it in my last post. Equal pay for equal work. Today President Obama made such a poingnant speech as he signed the Lilly Ledbetter bill that I thought that sharing the story was an important way to high-lite some of the magnificent women that are paving the way for all of us.

Well into his first full week as President of the United States, Barack Obama—with the backing of the US Congress—is signing into legislation equal pay for equal work! Woot as many say on twitter when someone loves something.

In two weeks and a couple of days, love will emerge with a barrage of chocolate hearts, kisses and flowers; the colors red and pink will abound in the rush to find that perfect gift (for that perfect someone) with the aim of sweeping your the object of your affection off their feet. I still remember cutting out Valentines cards for everyone in my grade school class and the excitement I felt that night when I went to sleep—knowing that everyone else was doing the same thing as we geared up for the in-class card exchange the next day.

I just read a great article (after which I named this post) in I Media Connection, written by Doug Schumacher. I Media Connection is a marketing community that posts all sorts of great marketing information. This article was as humorous for me as it was informative, as it talks about the fact that even if you make a conscientious effort NOT to participate in social media, it is ultimately inevitable that you already ARE—in so many ways!

In 1995 I was returning to Toronto from New York on a routine, almost commuter flight. Just as the plane landed upon our arrival at Pearson Int’l airport, the tires blew and caught fire. The plane skidded across the runway and abruptly stopped amid ambulances, fire trucks, police cars etc. You could see the flames outside the window, which appeared to be close to the engines. Suddenly, the chutes came out and the flurry of fleeing passengers began. People were trying to grab their bags from the upper baggage compartments, stewardesses were screaming for everyone to take off their shoes and get onto the shoot. As you took your turn and entered the door you saw that the drop looked like you were jumping from the CN Tower. With no time to think, you slid down at warp speed to be greeted by someone on the ground shouting for you to run…we ran towards a grassed section well away from the plane that still had flames coming from the tires that had blown and waited for a bus to taking us to a holding terminal. In those days most people did not have a cell phone or laptop—let alone the ability to provide a real-time account of what had happened. Lines formed with people on payphones trying to call their loved ones while sitting there for several hours. Not being in contact with anyone except for those that shared this experience kept this frightening event extremely insular.

I am reading a book right now called The Travellers Gift by Andy Andrews. It is about the seven decisions that determine personal success. The first decision is that “The buck stops here.” I am responsible for my past and my future. The buck stops here.”

In 2009 women still lag behind in math, science and technology. That being said, it is great to see that at the onset of a New Year another women has been named CEO for Yahoo.

This article is two fold as I am going to attach Seth Godin’s blog post today as it relates to one of his books—of which I read “Meatball Sundae”—and Wedgewood China, which he also wrote about in the book and was featured in an article in the New York Times January 9, 09.

There is a saying that says beauty is only skin deep. I truly believe and live each day as a woman who sees beauty in individuality. But while I do believe and live in that sense of importance for ones true self—for many women and tween/teen girls—beauty is directly related and decided by the endless barrage of media that tells us a women must be tall and thin with a long mane of gorgeously coiffed hair and dressed in fabulous designer clothes to be qualified to be beautiful.

Happy 2009 everyone! I thought I would start the New Year on a personal note. As many of our readers know we love technology and the many social media tools such as our blog, that grant a forum for us to speak about the things that we feel are relevant, interesting and educational.
