When it comes to my understanding of “Social Media” (or should I be saying, Social Networking Communities) one of the pivotal sources of information for me was a book entitled, Groundswell. The authors, Josh Bernoff and Christine Li, were both at Forrester Research and they really clarified this new digital medium for me while providing a spectacular argument, with many case studies sited for reference, to substantiate its relevance and the importance to engaging NOW.

Today’s post is apropos, as it addresses the fact that the means of communication prior to the advent of technology began with stories. At the dawn of evolution, stories were spread by word of mouth or drawn onto stone walls to be documented and passed along from generation to generation. I have always said that everyone has a story to tell. The value of that story is priceless when it is authentic, transparent and leads to why something clearly stands out and grabs at your core. A story that says, “this is the way I think, the way the I feel and the way that I want to lead my life.” Social media now provides the opportunity to return back to an earlier time by encouraging people to not only engage one-to-one with the products and services that they value and use, but also with each other.

I am definitely a fan of anyone who aims to teach me something new each and everyday. One of my favorite ‘tutors’—and probably one of yours—is Seth Godin. His blog posts teach me something each day and they often do it with a humorous edge that cleverly points out the obvious. I think many of us spend so much time looking to find the answer in some calculated, statistical way (because ‘it can’t possibly be that simple’) that we often miss the point. So many solutions would reveal themselves—brilliant, flashing light bulb moments—if we could just sit still and allow ourselves to ignore the clutter. The jargon. The white noise.
