I have been writing for almost 4 years now about the power of social media. With Linkedin’s success on their IPO – shares closed at Thursday’s closing price of $94, it’s trading at 36 times its 2010 revenue; Google trades at five times.
This legitimizes the power and success of social media and re-enforces for all businesses – it is time to get into the game. It also points to many other big companies, Canada’s major retailer The Bay is rumored to be looking at an IPO for the fall. I did a speaking engagement last week to a group of Sr. Executive women. When asked my advice on what is most important when looking to engage your business with social media -” I said you need to understand who your target market is and then aptly find ways to understand what their social computing behavior is and go from there.” Using the right data and traffic analysis tools – to find out who your most influential followers are and how they utilize social media tools – is the key to connecting with them and all the people that follow them and so on. So many people as I wrote in an early post a few weeks ago – get focused on building thousands of fans and or followers -rather than focusing on who that early adopter and or influencer is – for their community and the best way to communicate with them and their many followers who are part of your target market. When we created SHARE, it was founded on a basic idea: that as successful, bright, creative women who are key influencers and decision makers for point of purchase (across so many categories and channels), we could really make a difference with our knowledge, based on who we are and the clients we work with. Ford is leading the pack when it comes to finding ways to engage their consumer. They have just created a campaign where they are selecting customers to be given a Ford Fiesta car and in return, have them blog about their experiences with the car. It is this kind of creativity, brand building and viral marketing plan that allows the customers to not only engage—but actually become the brand evangelist and brand ambassador for the company.
