As I continue to educate myself by trying to figure out all the ways that I can use social media in one day, I find that it’s become a bit of a full time job. Amazingly, there are all sorts of tools available that can assist you. I am sure many of you are already familiar with the various tools that allow you to post on several of your social media networks at one time.

Of course in my day, the internet was the lonely domain of computer geeks. As a result, I’m still a little slow to personally adopt all of these technologies. That is to say, technology application is not my favourite hobby or top skill set (but ask me which Prada bag goes with which pair of Louboutins, and I’m a freaking genius!). The time each day that it takes me to read about, visit and figure out how to use each tool could have been so much better spent taking the appropriate high school courses — had they been available at the time. Instead, I need to figure out who in my superstar group of social media tycoons is most familiar with my new tool of the day. And then comes the torture…I mean, tutorial. (Thus, I give a heartfelt shout out to all of those tycoons before I continue on!)

In the November 19th edition of the New York Times, there was an article entitled “Teenagers’ Internet Socializing Not a Bad Thing” by Tamar Lewin. In this article, Tamar talks about a study done by the MacArthur Foundation.

“It may look as though kids are wasting a lot of time hanging out with new media, whether it’s on MySpace or sending instant messages,” said Mizuko Ito, lead researcher on the study, “Living and Learning With New Media.” “But their participation is giving them the technological skills and literacy they need to succeed in the contemporary world. They’re learning how to get along with others, how to manage a public identity, how to create a home page.”

The study, conducted from 2005 to last summer, describes new-media usage but does not measure its effects.

The article goes on to discuss how inextricably woven new media is into their lives and gives examples.

Funny…considering that the advent of cell phones that are now smart phones and easy access to a growing range of social media right on your laptop and pc, has now allowed new media to spread to all generations. Even my mother, well into her senior years, is now learning how to send texts from her “emergency only cell phone”. All of these technologies are now inextricably woven into how we communicate — day in and day out.

It is now time for corporations to adapt and educate themselves so that they can communicate in a way that gives their customers the power to communicate back. By planning and executing marketing channels that ensure they are utilizing the social media tools that will best represent them, they can reap the benefits by best engaging us!

Peace and Social Media!

Best Nicole
